Native Android development with Kotlin

Kotlin is the language Google recommends for Android apps. We use it to build apps that feel natural on Android devices – with the back gesture and the patterns Android users know.

As with our iOS apps, content comes from your web platform. Maintenance stays small, and new features appear in the browser, on iPhone and on Android at the same time. More under app development.

What your Android app can do

  • Push notifications via Firebase Cloud Messaging – with settings for which messages users receive.
  • App links: links to your domain open the right page directly in the app.
  • Files and camera: take photos, upload and download documents.
  • Calendar and printing: add appointments, print invoices or tickets.
  • Several brands: if you run more than one brand, we build several apps with their own name and look from one code base.

Publishing on Google Play

Google Play requires a complete listing with description, graphics, screenshots and detailed privacy information. New personal developer accounts must also test an app with testers for about two weeks before release. We plan these steps in, so your launch isn't held up by formalities. For iPhone users there is the counterpart: iOS apps.

How your Android app is built

Step 1: Concept

We clarify which features the app needs, which data it shows and how it works together with your existing platform. The result is a clear list of screens and flows.

Step 2: Development in Kotlin

We build the app natively in Kotlin, the language Google recommends for Android. That ensures smooth operation and full access to device features.

Step 3: Testing on real devices

Android runs on devices from many manufacturers with different screen sizes. We test in the emulator and on real phones before the app goes to the store.

Step 4: Publishing and updates

We build the app bundle, prepare the store listing and accompany Google’s review. After launch, we keep the app up to date for new Android versions.

What makes a good Android app

Users expect an app to start quickly, behave like other Android apps and use little battery. That includes:

  • Design following Google’s Material Design guidelines
  • Back button and gestures that behave as expected
  • Push notifications users can control themselves
  • Careful handling of permissions such as camera or location
  • A layout that adapts to font size and dark mode

Android and iOS from one team

Most companies need their app on both platforms. If your application already runs as a web platform, we build the Android and iPhone apps in parallel on that basis. You maintain content and features in one place, and both apps stay in sync. More in our app development.

Frequently asked questions

Find more answers in our FAQ.

Which Android versions are supported?

Usually Android 8 and newer. That covers the vast majority of devices in use today.

Can I order iOS and Android together?

Yes, and it usually makes sense. Because the logic lives on your server, both apps share most of the work.

Do push notifications work without Google services?

Push on Android runs through Firebase Cloud Messaging. On devices without Google services the app still works, just without push.

How much does an Android app cost?

That mainly depends on the features and on whether there is already a platform the app builds on. After a conversation about your requirements, you get a fixed-price quote.

Who owns the app?

You do. The app is published under your developer account on Google Play, and you receive the source code.

How often does an Android app need updates?

Google requires apps to keep up with new Android versions; otherwise they can become unavailable for new devices. We make sure your app meets the requirements.

Can the app work with my existing website or platform?

Yes, that is the most common case. The app uses the data and features of your platform and adds push notifications and other device features.

Can the app be distributed outside Google Play?

In principle yes, but for most companies it doesn’t make sense. On Google Play, users find the app more easily and receive updates automatically.
